Focus of Treatment:
Operative treatment of all pediatric malformations using state-of-the-art techniques including intra-operative MRI and endoscopy. This includes: the surgical correction of encephalocele and meningocele, spina bifida and tethered spinal cord syndrome, the treatment of hydrocephalus with shunt systems or endoscopic techniques, the correction of developmental anomalies like craniosynostosis, and surgery for pediatric brain and spinal tumors like medulloblastoma, ependymoma or PNET. The division places special emphasis on epilepsy surgery in children. The interdisciplinary management of patients occurs through collaboration with the Dept. of General Pediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology and Epileptology.
Neuro - Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Neurocritical care is performed in a specialized unit by an interdisciplinary team consisting
of neurosurgeons, neurologists, and anesthesiologists. The focus of the NICU is the treatment and monitoring of patients suffering from traumatic brain injury, stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Epilepsy surgery consists of the conventional and stereotactic implantation of invasive diagnostic tools like grids and electrodes, the stimulation of cerebral structures (e.g., vagus nerve stimulation) and techniques to precisely resect the epileptic focus (foci) of the brain.
Further techniques such as hemispherectomy or callosotomy may be
used in selected cases. Presurgical evaluation, operative treatment, and post-operative management are performed in close cooperation with the Dept. of Epileptology. Both departments together forming the Bonn Epilepsy Center.
Neurovascular surgery consists of the treatment of intracranial aneurysms by operative clipping or endovascular coiling (done by specialized interventional Neuroradiologists), the treatment of cavernomas and arteriovenous fistulas, and the therapy of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM) by the best combination of all treatment options: endovascular embolization, operative resection, and radiosurgery. Additionally,
extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery may be performed in selected cases. Ultimately,
we strive to find a tailored solution for each individual patient.
Diagnosis and treatment of all kinds of spinal disorders from back pain to complex malformations, infections, tumors or degenerative diseases. All procedures are performed as minimally invasive as possible and with a maximum of safety. To make this possible, we employ microscopy, neuronavigation, electrophysiological monitoring, and percutaneous methods.
Surgery of brain tumors / Skull base surgery
In most brain tumors, we strive to completely resect the tumor without any loss of neurological function. Therefore, the balance between radicality of resection and safety is of utmost importance. Our latest state-of-the-art techniques (e.g intraoperative MRI, neuronavigation, electrophysiological monitoring) support our experienced neurosurgeons in the safe and radical resection of gliomas, brain metastases, and other intracranial tumors, many of which wouldn’t have been resectable just a few years ago. The combined micro- and radiosurgical treatment of pituitary adenomas, acoustic neuromas, chordomas, and other tumors of the skull base is also a focus of our department.
This division consists of the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, psychiatric disorders and complex pain syndromes refractory to conventional therapy by deep brain, cortical, or spinal stimulation.
